When struggling with carrying several bits and not using a plastic bag, the cashier asks 'you want a bag' or some such. I think he said 'voulez vous une '. My expectation is that a bag would be un sac, but maybe poche is also sometimes used to mean a small plastic bag?

It's 'un pochon', which is another word for plastic bag.

RépondreSupprimerAhh, yes. and there on http://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/pochon it says poche is a synonym of pochon in Sud-Ouest de la France, which is where I was when I was asked if I wanted one -that's why I put the location on the post.
